Firearms Technical Advisor & Consultant

Firearms Technical Advisor & Consultant

I'm a licensed Class 2 SOT / FFL 07 firearms manufacturer and gunsmith based in Roan Mountain, TN, working hands, on with firearms spanning from antique and historically significant pieces to modern NFA, regulated builds. I consult with authors, screenwriters, and production researchers who want firearm details, handling, terminology, mechanics, and the legal reality around ownership and regulation, to hold up under scrutiny from readers and viewers who actually know guns. My experience dates back to 1991, South Africa as a professional Gunsmith with a storefront business servicing 61 retail gun stores who did not have a gunsmith on staff.

What I Help With

Manuscript & script technical review

I read pages involving firearms and flag anything a knowledgeable reader would catch as wrong, handling, terminology, and what a given firearm can and can't actually do.

Regulatory & legal accuracy

NFA items, tax stamps, state by state legality, detail that's easy to get wrong and changes fast. The suppressor tax stamp rules alone changed again in 2026.

Historical & period firearms

Direct restoration experience with antique and collector firearms, useful for any project set in a specific era where small details need to hold up.

Mechanical & build detail

How firearms are actually built, modified, and repaired, useful for characters who are gunsmiths, collectors, or manufacturers themselves, not just end users.

Remote, friendly consulting

This is a technical accuracy role, not on, set prop handling, work happens by phone, email, or video call from anywhere.

Credentials

Licensed Class 2 SOT / FFL 07, authorized to manufacture NFA, regulated firearms, not just deal in them.

Restored more than 70 firearms damaged in Hurricane Helene, including historically significant pieces requiring careful, noninvasive work to preserve their value.

Daily hands, on work across barrel threading, suppressor fitting, pin & weld, restoration, and bespoke gunsmithing, practical working knowledge, not reference, book familiarity.

Writing sample: see the Understanding Suppressors guide on this site, a published example of explaining fast, changing, technical firearms law in plain language a general reader can follow.

How This Works

Send the specific pages or scenes involved, not the full manuscript up front. I markup specific issues with plain, language explanations of the fix, rather than a general note that something feels off. Turnaround and rate depend on scope, a few pages of dialogue review is a different job than an ongoing relationship with a production or publisher, and that gets discussed before any work starts.
