Understanding Suppressors:
What Changed in 2026

Because my gunshop is a manufacturing, machining, and repair business, and because I hold a Class 2 Special Occupational Tax (SOT) license under FFL 07, which lets me manufacture NFA items, not just deal in them, I get quite a few questions about my favorite firearm accessory: silencers, or more correctly in the trade, suppressors.


Here's the big change: as of January 1, 2026, the $200 federal tax that came with every suppressor purchase is gone. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, reduced the NFA transfer tax on suppressors (along with SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs) to $0. You still go through the same registration process, submitting an ATF Form 4 with fingerprints, a photo, and a background check, but the $200 fee that used to come with it is no longer part of the deal. That's real money back in your pocket, especially if you're building out more than one can.


The Hearing Protection Act, which would remove suppressors from NFA regulation entirely, is still sitting in Congress (H.R. 404 in the House, S. 364 in the Senate) and hasn't passed. So the registration and background check requirement isn't going anywhere yet, just the tax.


The process to acquire a suppressor typically involves selecting a model, purchasing it through a licensed dealer, and submitting that ATF Form 4. Wait times used to run 6 to 12 months, but the ATF's move to electronic eForms has changed that dramatically,  as of 2026, individual eForm 4 approvals are commonly running in about a week, with paper forms still crawling along far slower. 
Ownership has surged because of all this. ATF data now shows roughly 5.7 million legally registered suppressors in the U.S. as of early 2026,  nearly double the count from just a few years ago, and the tax elimination is a big part of why.


Technical Details
A suppressor works by slowing and cooling the high-pressure gases that exit a firearm's muzzle when a shot is fired. Contrary to Hollywood depictions, suppressors do not eliminate sound,  they reduce it by roughly 20 to 35 decibels (dB), depending on the firearm, ammunition, and suppressor design. For context, an unsuppressed gunshot can exceed 160 dB, well above the 140 dB threshold for hearing damage, while a suppressed shot might drop to 120-130 dB,  still loud, but meaningfully safer for the shooter's ears.
The basic design consists of a usually cylindrical metal tube housing a series of baffles or chambers. Most are built to be disassembled for cleaning; some are sealed, welded units. I've also recently seen a 3D-printed baffle core come through the shop. When a bullet is fired, the propellant gases expand rapidly behind it, creating the shockwave we hear as a loud bang. The suppressor traps those gases, letting them expand gradually within the internal chambers so the energy and heat dissipate before release. Modern suppressors often use stainless steel, titanium, or aluminum for durability and weight — a titanium suppressor might weigh as little as 8 ounces, which matters if you're a hunter carrying a rifle over long distances.


Suppressors come in two main attachment styles: direct-thread, which screws onto the barrel, and quick-detach (QD), which uses a mounting system for rapid swaps between firearms. Caliber-specific design matters for compatibility, running a .45 caliber suppressor on a 9mm pistol is fine, but putting a 9mm suppressor on a .45 firearm risks a baffle strike and damage to the can, since the bore diameters don't match. Subsonic ammunition, with its slower bullet velocity, enhances suppression by removing the sonic crack that supersonic rounds create when they break the sound barrier, something no suppressor can quiet down.


Practical Considerations
Owning a suppressor offers benefits beyond noise reduction. They reduce recoil and improve accuracy by stabilizing muzzle rise, and they protect hearing, especially indoors or during long shooting sessions. They also help reduce flinch,  that involuntary tensing and blink in anticipation of the blast and recoil. (And if you're chuckling and thinking "not me", pay attention next time you squeeze off on a dud round or an empty chamber.) On the other hand, they add length to a firearm, can overheat with rapid fire, and need regular cleaning to manage carbon buildup.


Cost is still a factor, quality suppressors run $300 to $1,500, but as of 2026, there's no $200 tax stamp stacked on top anymore. That alone makes this a noticeably better time to buy than it was even a year ago.

Do I still need to register a suppressor with the ATF?
Yes. Suppressors remain Title II items under the NFA. The Hearing Protection Act, which would remove that requirement entirely, is still pending in Congress and hasn't passed.
How long does approval take now?
Individual eForm 4 applications are commonly approved in about a week as of 2026, down from the 6-12 month waits that were typical a few years ago. Paper forms are still far slower, use eForms if you can.
